Wildlife Sanctuary Tangier, Morocco

In June 2016 I had the privilege in volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary in Tangier, Morocco, which was home to over 56 dogs, 30 cats, 3 donkeys, 3 owls, a wild boar and a Barbary macaque.

I spent four weeks caring for these animals whilst minimising the risk of diseases such as rabies, parvovirus and canine distemper.

My day was filled with animal care, feeding duties, cleaning enclosures, administering medicines and cleaning and dressing wounds.

I had such a fabulous time working at the sanctuary although it was challenging at times due to the distress of some animals. It was far more rewarding and it was clear that this way of life; caring for all animals, monitoring animal behaviour in order to develop behaviour amendment training and educating the local community, was a vocation I would thrive in and love.

During my time at the sanctuary the owners were able to enjoy some well deserved rest bite, as they had expressed their confidence in myself to care for the animals and manage the sanctuary. I took pride in the fact I was able to relieve their duties on multiple occasions, one of which included caring for abandoned kittens just days old overnight.
